British Prime Minister Resigns

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has resigned. He will stay in power until a new leader is chosen by his party. Keir Starmer won a big election in 2024, but people are not happy with him now. His government made some mistakes, and his party lost in local elections. Some important people in his party asked him to resign. Andy Burnham, a famous politician, might become the new Prime Minister. He was the Mayor of Greater Manchester until last week.

We learned some new words today. 'Downfall' means when someone loses power or status. It can also mean the thing that makes them lose power. We use 'downfall' in politics, but also in other situations, like when someone gets caught for a crime or when we eat too much chocolate and it's our downfall. We also learned 'malaise', which means a feeling of low energy or bad health. It can be used to talk about a country, a company, or a team. If a country has a malaise, people feel unhappy and things are getting worse.

We also learned 'a hard act to follow'. This means someone who has done something well and it will be hard for the next person to match it. We can use it to talk about a sports coach or player, a colleague at work, or even a singer or comedian.
