England Mayors Allowed to Impose Tourist Tax

England may let city mayors add a small tax for people who stay overnight. The idea is called a levy. It could be less than five percent of the price you pay for a hotel room or a B&B. If you travel to London, Manchester or any other town, you might see this extra charge on your bill.

Other countries in Europe already use similar taxes. In France, each town decides its own levy and the amount can be from 65 cents to 15.60 euros per night. Spain lets each region choose whether to have a tax, and cities like Barcelona add a surcharge on top. Italy also lets local councils set the rate; Milan raised its tax to help pay for the Winter Olympics infrastructure. Greece uses a special climate resilience tax that the national government controls. The money is meant to keep the environment safe and to support tourists.

For visitors, the new rule means you may pay a little more for your accommodation. The charge will be decided by the local municipality and could change each year. Keep an eye on your booking details so you know the total cost before you travel.
