Imagine being trapped on an island with smoke all around you. On September 11, 2001, this happened to thousands of people in New York City. After the twin towers fell, people ran to the water to find safety.
This was the start of an unprecedented event in American history. There was so much chaos in the streets, and people did not know where to go. They reached the edge of Manhattan and saw the water. Suddenly, the Coast Guard called for help. They wanted any vessel in the area to come to the harbor to save people. Soon, every ferry, tugboat, and private boat arrived. Every brave responder on these boats worked hard to coordinate the rescue. This huge maritime rescue became known as Operation Boat Lift. It was a beautiful moment of solidarity where strangers helped strangers. They worked all day to make sure the evacuation was successful.
In just nine hours, these boats carried about 500,000 people to safety. It was larger than the famous rescue at Dunkirk. Today, we still remember the kind captains and crews who saved so many lives.
