Long ago, in the 14th century, Scotland's King Robert the Bruce wanted to take over England's Carlisle Castle. But, it was raining a lot, and his soldiers were very tired. They tried to make a big tower to climb over the castle walls, but the English people made it harder for them. They used sticks to make the walls higher. The Scots were very sad and went home after 11 days. This was a big problem for the Scots because castles were very strong and hard to break.
Castles were not just for fighting. They were also homes for kings and queens, and they showed how powerful they were. But, castles were also used for bad things like hurting people or making them do what they wanted. Some castles were built a long time ago, even before the 8th century. But, most castles were built in the 9th century when the king's power was going down. The nobles built castles to be in charge of their own land. These early castles were made of wood and were not very strong. But, they were better than nothing.
As time went on, castles got stronger and more beautiful. They were built with stone and had walls and towers. Some castles were even painted with different colors. But, the people who built castles also made new ways to break them. They used fire, big sticks, and strong machines to knock down the walls. The castles were very good at keeping people safe, but they were not perfect. Eventually, the castles became too expensive to build and maintain, and the nobles couldn't afford them anymore. Now, most castles are just for tourists and private houses.
