What Are Tariffs and How Do They Work?

Have you ever wondered why some things from other countries cost so much? Sometimes, governments put a special tax on items that come from abroad. This tax is called a tariff. In 1930, an American president named Herbert Hoover wanted to help his country's workers, so he decided to use this tax on many foreign products.

He wanted to protect American agriculture, which means farming, and also local industry, which means factories. To do this, he placed a high tax on every foreign import that came into the United States. He thought this would make people buy more American goods. However, this plan had a very bad consequence that nobody wanted. Other countries got angry and decided to retaliate by putting taxes on American goods. This meant that US businesses could not sell their products abroad easily. Soon, every American export became too expensive for people in other countries to buy. Because of this, global trade started to decline very fast, and many people lost their jobs.

This big trade war hurt the global economy and made life harder for the average consumer who just wanted to buy cheap goods. When you shop today, remember that taxes on foreign items can change prices in your local store. A simple tax can start a chain reaction that affects the whole world.
