What Does Fun Look Like in North Korea?

Imagine a place where everything is controlled. You might think of North Korea as an isolated nation with no fun. But things are changing slowly in the capital city of Pyongyang. There is a strange outbreak of new ways to enjoy life.

Now, some citizens can go to nice coffee shops and enjoy retail therapy by buying clothes. They can also visit huge waterparks with big slides. These new amenities are very modern and clean. The country's political regime wants to show the world that its people are happy. However, these fun places are mostly for the elite class of people who have money. Many normal citizens cannot go there because international sanctions make life very expensive. For the wealthy people, these parks are a great distraction from the country's problems. They can spend their free hours enjoying leisure activities just like people in other countries do. They can drink expensive coffee and buy imported goods.

This new fun does not mean there is prosperity for every family in the country. Most people still struggle every day to find food and work. But in the capital, the view of daily life is changing.
