Why AI Data Centers Use Massive Power

You might have heard about big buildings that power AI tools like ChatGPT. These are called data centers. Since 2019, more than a thousand of them have been built worldwide. Each one is as big as a football field and needs a lot of resources.

Inside a data center, thousands of computers work together to run and train large language models. To keep them cool, the buildings use huge amounts of water and electricity. The amount of electricity can be as much as a small city, and the water use can match a small town. This high consumption raises questions about sustainability. Companies try to improve efficiency by using better cooling systems and renewable power. The infrastructure must also be able to grow, because the scale of AI work keeps getting bigger.

So, when you chat with an AI, remember the massive data center behind it. The challenge is to keep the power and water use in check while the technology keeps expanding.
