Why People Used to Fear Cats in History

Look around your neighborhood and you will likely see cats resting in sunny windows. Today, almost forty percent of American families share their homes with a purring friend. You might think people always treated them as cuddly companions, but history tells a much darker tale.

Centuries ago, especially in medieval Europe, cats had a terrible reputation. Instead of giving them treats, many people looked at them with deep fear. Church leaders and common folk even compared them to the devil. Because cats wander during the dark night and have glowing eyes, folks told strange stories about them. They believed a black cat was a partner to an evil witch. During those hard times, people hurt cats instead of caring for them. Still, farmers and city workers noticed something practical. Cats could hunt mice and help protect grain from pests. Over time, as cities cleaned up and people moved to town life, folks realized cats were actually clean and quiet. Owners began letting them stay indoor as real family members. Slowly, humans discovered how sweet, playful, and friendly these little hunters could be when treated with kindness.

Now, our relationship with these animals has flipped completely. Your local animal shelter works hard to find every small pet a warm household where they can sleep safely on the couch.
