How Dishwashers Work

Josephine Cochrane was a woman who had a big idea. She wanted to make cleaning dishes easier. She made a machine that could wash dishes. This was the first dishwasher. It was shown at the Chicago World's Fair. Now, we have dishwashers at home. They use hot water to clean dishes. The water gets hot to 60°C. Then it gets hotter to 68°C to make the dishes clean. This is hotter than the water in your sink.

The dishwasher uses a special liquid to clean the dishes. This liquid is called detergent. Detergent has special molecules that help clean the dishes. It also has bleach to make the dishes white and clean. Some people use powder detergent or pods. Powder detergent is good because it has enzymes that break down food. But pods are the best because they have separate parts that don't mix together. This makes them very effective.

You should not rinse your dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. This can make the dishwasher think the dishes are clean and it will not wash them properly. You should also not put sharp knives in the dishwasher. They can get damaged. But if you have a lot of dishes, a dishwasher can be very helpful.
