The self-immolation of Tenzin Lodoe Rabgye has sent shockwaves around the world, highlighting the desperate situation in Tibet, where the Chinese government's assimilation policies have led to over 170 Tibetans resorting to extreme measures in protest.
The Chinese government's rule in Tibet has been marked by a systematic effort to erase Tibetan culture and identity, including the forced assimilation of Tibetan nomads, the separation of Tibetan children from their families, and the suppression of Tibetan language and culture. The Ethnic Unity and Progress Law, enacted on July 1st, has made it even more difficult for Tibetans to maintain their identity and way of life.
The United Nations must take immediate action to address the situation in Tibet, including granting unfettered access to the region for investigators and human rights monitors, as well as breaking the silence on the issue and giving Tibet a voice in the international community.
