A video shared by a Williston Lake resident captured a puzzling sight: a small floating landmass covered with trees, appearing like a miniature island. Within weeks, the same spot showed the island gone, only to reappear later.
Satellite images confirmed the pattern. The pictures showed the landmass disappeared when water levels rose, then emerged again as the lake’s surface fell. Experts explain that the lake’s changing hydrology lifted old debris – mainly rotting wood stuck along the shoreline. Trees that had taken root on that wood were carried away, creating a temporary floating island. The vegetation on the debris made the feature look solid, even though it was just a bunch of logs and saplings. Scientists are now investigating the event, calling it a rare phenomenon that illustrates how water level shifts can reshape natural landscapes.
While the sight is intriguing, officials say it poses no risk to navigation or local wildlife. The island will likely drift, break apart, or sink as the water continues to move, leaving the lake to settle back into its usual state.
