Indonesia Village Sinking Due to Coastal Erosion

The village of Timbulsloko in Indonesia is facing a catastrophic situation, with its landmass sinking at an alarming rate of up to 15 centimeters per year. This is largely attributed to coastal erosion, a complex process that involves the gradual removal of land by the sea.

The loss of mangroves has significantly contributed to this situation. Mangroves not only act as a natural barrier, breaking the force of the waves and holding the sediment in place, but they also play a crucial role in maintaining the health of the coastline. However, many of them have been cut down or damaged, leaving the village vulnerable to the sea.

As a result, many families have been forced to leave the village, while others are staying and trying to adapt. They are modifying their houses or switching from farming to fishing. Some villages are also taking a more holistic approach, restoring the mangroves in an effort to rebuild a stronger coastline that can protect the village in the long run.
